If the flock is still locked in after sunrise, do not start with a factory reset. A fast, ordered diagnostic usually tells you whether the cause is settings, power, sensing or mechanical resistance.
Verify the opening schedule, then try a local manual open. If manual works, inspect timer and light-sensor logic. If manual fails too, check power, ice, alignment and calibration before assuming the motor is defective.
A door that will not open can leave the flock confined long after daylight. That is usually less immediately dangerous than an open door at midnight, but it can still create heat, water and welfare problems if nobody notices. The diagnostic path is similar to a closing failure, with a few important differences.
Check the current time, AM/PM, sunrise offset, light threshold and any delay. If the controller was reset or batteries were changed, confirm that the intended schedule survived.
A successful manual open tells you the motor and basic travel path can work. That points toward schedule, light sensing or network/app state. A failed manual open suggests power, binding, calibration or hardware.
For vertical doors, debris or ice can affect the upper track as well as the threshold. Make sure screws, trim and warped framing are not narrowing the path. On sliding systems, inspect the full direction of travel.
Cold batteries or aging cells may light a display but fail when the motor starts. Replace them with the exact type recommended for the device. If using a solar system, check the panel for snow, dirt or deep shade and confirm the rechargeable cells are the specified chemistry.
A sensor mounted in a dark overhang or inside the coop may not see morning light the way you expect. ChickenGuard notes that inside mounting can prevent use of the front-panel sensor on some opener models. If the system offers timer mode, temporarily test with an exact time to isolate the sensor.
Water can freeze in tracks or at the bottom edge overnight. Look for a roof drip line, condensation and snow melt that refreezes. Do not force the motor repeatedly against ice. Clear the obstruction manually and address where the moisture is coming from.
If the door starts moving and stops early, travel calibration may be incorrect. Follow the exact manual for your model rather than using a generic reset sequence. Model years can differ.

Artificial light can confuse dusk and dawn logic. Infrared emitters can also interfere with some sensor systems. Move or shield nearby devices temporarily and test again.
If the flock needs out now, use the manufacturer-approved manual opening procedure instead of repeatedly cycling a stalled motor. Then troubleshoot with the birds safely out of the way.
Keep bedding below the threshold, inspect alignment monthly, replace batteries before severe winter weather, keep solar panels clear and test manual override before you actually need it.
If the door opens late every day by roughly the same amount, investigate schedule or light thresholds. If it fails only after freezing nights, investigate ice and batteries. If it sometimes opens after you tap the frame or move the panel, mechanical resistance becomes more likely.
Confirm the controller is awake and responsive. Check battery indicators, error lights or status messages. A completely dead controller and a responsive controller with a stuck door are different problems and should not be troubleshot the same way.
If a solar door fails after several dark days, inspect the panel and charging conditions before assuming the motor is bad. Snow, dirt or new shade from seasonal sun angles can reduce charging. Verify that the rechargeable battery type matches the manual.
Use the approved manual release as soon as practical, especially in warm weather or if water is outside the enclosed coop. Do not repeatedly force a stalled motor while birds wait. Once the flock is safe, diagnose the automation without pressure.
A door that starts upward but stops at a consistent height may have a travel-limit or calibration issue. A door that never attempts to move is more likely related to schedule, sensing, control state or power. Follow the exact calibration instructions for the model year because button sequences and app workflows can change.
The mechanics are probably functional. Focus on light sensing, schedule, time settings and control mode.
Some infrared emitters or nearby artificial lighting can affect light-based systems. Test with the nearby device temporarily disabled if the manual warns about sensor interference.
