A door that stays open after dusk is more than an inconvenience. Work through the failure in a logical order so you can separate a simple track or setting issue from a real hardware problem.
First clear the track, test manual closing and install healthy manufacturer-approved batteries. If manual closing works, investigate schedules and light sensing. If it does not, focus on friction, alignment, calibration and hardware.
When an automatic coop door will not close, the temptation is to blame the motor or controller. In practice, many failures begin with something much simpler: bedding in the track, a warped opening, low batteries, a sensor seeing artificial light or a schedule that is not set the way you think it is.
Remove bedding, feathers, frozen debris and dirt from the threshold and rails. Watch the door move through a full manual cycle. If it slows at the same point every time, the problem is probably mechanical resistance rather than scheduling.
Wood coops move. Moisture can swell boards and fasteners can pull the frame slightly out of alignment. Measure the opening and look for rubbing marks. An automatic door motor is not designed to correct a crooked opening by force.
Do not assume a battery is healthy because the display still lights up. A motor needs more current under load than a small screen does. A porch light, coop light, infrared camera or nearby floodlight can keep a sensor from interpreting dusk correctly. Check AM/PM, daylight-saving changes, time zone, sunrise/sunset offsets and any safety delay. After a battery change or factory reset, some models can revert to default schedules. Read the current manual for your exact model year.
Safety stops are designed to prevent a bird from being trapped. If the door repeatedly begins to close and then reverses or stops, inspect for friction, warped rails or objects that create enough resistance to mimic an obstruction.
Ice can form where rain runs down the wall, snow can pack into the threshold and batteries can weaken in severe cold. Never use grease unless the manufacturer explicitly approves it. RUN-CHICKEN specifically warns against lubricating its rails.

If the motor grinds, wiring is damaged, the housing has taken on water, or the door cannot be secured manually, stop relying on automation until the manufacturer or a qualified repair path resolves the issue. Flock security matters more than keeping the automation online.
Pay attention to exactly what happens. A door that never starts closing suggests a schedule, sensor or control problem. A door that starts and stops at the same physical point suggests friction or calibration. A door that closes normally on mild nights but fails during freezing weather points toward temperature, ice or battery performance.
Stand beside the coop with the flock out of the doorway and run several manual close/open cycles. Watch the speed and listen. A clean mechanism should move consistently. Scraping, hesitation or a change in motor sound near one section of travel gives you a location to inspect.
Some controllers reset time, calibration or default mode when power is removed. After replacing batteries, confirm the actual clock, open/close method and any offset. A fresh battery can appear to have made the problem worse when the real issue is that the controller reverted to factory settings.
If the door supports timer mode, set a test close time a few minutes ahead while you are standing at the coop. If the door closes on timer but not on light mode, the mechanics and power are probably fine. Then focus on sensor placement, ambient lighting and threshold settings.
Disconnect or use the approved manual-release procedure if the manufacturer allows it, then move the panel only as instructed. If the panel binds without motor force, correct the track or frame issue before recalibrating electronics.
