Home / Automatic Doors / What Happens to an Automatic Chicken Coop Door During a Power Outage?
A power outage can be a non-event for one automatic coop door and a serious problem for another. The difference is whether the door runs from replaceable batteries, a charged internal battery, a battery-backed solar system or mains power with no backup.
There is no universal power-outage behavior. Battery-powered doors usually continue working until their batteries are depleted. Solar doors with a charged internal battery may also continue normally. A mains-only door can stop immediately, and some controllers may lose or reset their clock or require a manual restart after power returns. Check your exact model before relying on it during an outage.
Automatic coop doors are sold with very different electrical designs. Some use ordinary replaceable batteries, some use solar charging with an internal battery, and some depend on AC power. That means a neighborhood outage does not affect every door the same way.
If the door runs entirely from AA, AAA or another replaceable battery, the electric grid is not part of the normal operating path. The important question is battery condition. Our guide on what happens when an automatic coop-door battery dies covers that failure mode.
Many solar doors charge a built-in battery during daylight and operate from stored energy when sunlight is unavailable. A house outage may therefore have no immediate effect. However, several cloudy days, a snow-covered panel or a depleted battery can still stop the system.
Doors that require a wall outlet need a plan for loss of power. Some can be manually opened. AutomaticChickenCoopDoor.com, for example, states that its mains-powered door can be manually opened during a power outage. Other controllers can behave differently.
Power returning does not always mean the door instantly resumes its normal schedule. Some units may retain settings, while others may need the clock reset, a power button pressed or a fresh calibration. A current WININMETA manual notes that certain power interruptions can require a manual press to restart the unit.
If a mains-powered door loses power while fully closed, your chickens may remain secured but unable to exit at the programmed time. If it loses power while open, the flock may lose nighttime protection until someone intervenes. If it fails mid-travel, follow the manufacturer procedure rather than forcing the motor or panel.
Do not wait for a storm to discover that you do not know how to release the door. Read the manual, find the manual-open procedure and confirm that everyone who may care for the flock knows it.

Usually yes, because it does not rely on household AC power. It will still stop if its own batteries are weak or depleted.
Normally a self-contained solar door is independent of household power, but it depends on its internal battery and charging system.
That is model-specific. Some retain schedules; others may need their clock reset or the controller restarted.

RUN-CHICKEN owners should check whether their model uses replaceable alkaline cells or a rechargeable drive unit in the RUN-CHICKEN troubleshooting guide.
