ChickenGuard String Tangled Around the Motor? How to Fix It

A tangled ChickenGuard string can stop the door, trigger motor errors and make calibration fail. The fix is mechanical: free the string, rewind it correctly and remove the condition that created the slack.

Quick answer

Remove power, take the opener down and inspect the motor and spindle. ChickenGuard says the string should be rewound between the spindle discs and feed out in the correct direction. After reassembly, remount the unit and run a fresh calibration.

Why the ChickenGuard string tangles

Common causes include dirt in the runners, frost, rails that are too tight and excess slack left during calibration. Any of these can let the string jump or wrap where it should not.

1. Stop operating the motor

Repeatedly running the opener against a tangle can strain the motor and damage the string.

2. Remove the opener from the coop

Work on a flat surface with power removed so you can access the spindle safely.

3. Unwind and rewind the string correctly

ChickenGuard’s guidance shows the string routed between the spindle discs and flowing toward the rear before leaving the housing. Keep it centered and free of knots.

4. Fix the reason it tangled

Clear debris, loosen tight runners and remove ice. If the door binds, the tangle is likely to return.

5. Avoid extra slack during calibration

Release the down control as soon as the door reaches its closed position. Continuing to feed string after the door has stopped creates slack.

6. Reassemble and recalibrate

Once the string path is correct, reinstall the opener and run a fresh calibration.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tangled string cause Motor Power Error?

Yes. ChickenGuard lists a tangled string as a cause of motor power problems.

Should the string be tight when the door is closed?

It should not have unnecessary slack that can jump the spindle.
