ChickenGuard Troubleshooting Guide: Errors, Sensors, Batteries and Motors

ChickenGuard problems are easier to solve when you start with the symptom instead of changing settings at random. This guide organizes the most common failures by power, motor, string, sensor, timing and calibration so you can jump to the right fix.

Quick answer

Start by checking battery voltage and whether the door moves freely. Then match the exact symptom to the relevant guide below. ChickenGuard exposes useful clues on screen, including Motor Power Error, Motor Missing, Door Ajar, Ext Light Error and low-battery warnings.

Start with power and movement

If the screen is blank, dim or showing battery warnings, solve power first. If the screen is normal but the door will not move, check whether the panel slides freely before blaming the motor.

Error messages

ChickenGuard uses specific messages that narrow the fault considerably. Treat the exact wording as your starting point.

Motor and string problems

A motor that appears dead may simply be underpowered, jammed by the string or fighting a tight door. Work through the mechanical checks before replacing the motor.

Sensor and timing problems

If the door moves correctly but operates at the wrong time, the issue is usually clock, timer or light-sensor logic rather than the motor.

Winter-specific ChickenGuard problems

Cold weather can reduce battery output and add friction from ice. The All-in-One also has a Winter Mode on supported firmware.

When recalibration is actually useful

Recalibration is important after battery changes, string repairs and certain error states, but it should come after the underlying mechanical or electrical fault is corrected. Repeated calibration cannot fix a tight runner, weak battery or broken wire.

For calibration-specific problems, see ChickenGuard Door Error / Recalibrate Door.
